/ Content

Theory :
• Procedure for measuring soil resistivity and resistance of pylon earthing systems,
• Use of the measuring tool,
• Possible errors during a measurement and how to avoid them,
• Consistency checks to be carried out during measurements.

Practical exercises:
• Performing an earth resistance measurement on a pylon with the consistency checks provided for in the measurement guide,
• Performing a measurement.

In-class debriefing:
• Analysis of ground resistivity measurements,
• Critique and analysis of tower earthing resistance measurements.

/ Objective

• Carry out soil resistivity measurements,
• Explain and apply the measurement procedure,
• Explain the consistency checks carried out during a soil resistivity measurement,
• List some possible sources of error during a soil resistivity measurement and describe possible ways of getting round them,
• Interpret the results of a soil resistivity measurement,
• Carry out reliable tower earth measurements for towers with or without guard cables,
• Explain and apply the measurement procedure,
• Explain the consistency checks carried out during a tower earth resistance measurement,
• List some possible sources of error when measuring the resistance of pylon earthing systems and describe possible ways of getting round them,
• Criticise the results of a tower earthing measurement.
